Houston Symphony Ceo Takes Final Bow Moves To Lyric Opera Of Chicago

Lyric Opera of Chicago Hires New General Director

John Mangum to Succeed Anthony Freud

Season Finale Headlined by World-Renowned Soprano Jennifer Holloway

The Lyric Opera of Chicago has announced that John Mangum has been hired to succeed Anthony Freud as general director. Mangum, a veteran orchestra manager who currently leads the Houston Symphony, will take over on July 1, 2023.

Mangum has a long history of success in the arts world. As executive director and CEO of the Houston Symphony, he oversaw a 50% growth in its budget and a significant expansion of its programming. He also helped guide the orchestra through the turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his new role at the Lyric Opera, Mangum will be responsible for all aspects of the company's operations, including artistic planning, fundraising, and audience development. He will also work closely with the music director, Enrique Mazzola, to create a vibrant and exciting opera season.

The Lyric Opera's 2023-24 season will open on September 15 with a new production of Verdi's Don Carlo. The season will also feature productions of Puccini's La Bohème, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, and Wagner's Lohengrin. The season finale, on June 7 and 9, 2024, will be headlined by world-renowned dramatic soprano Jennifer Holloway in the title role of Strauss's Elektra.
